Work / Meta

Lead AR Designer at Meta

From 2012 to 2013, I helped shape early AR interaction patterns, product language, and concept direction as the lead designer.

Role and context

I joined as the first designer and became lead designer on a very early AR team.

There was no existing playbook, so I worked with the team to build one from scratch and make it practical for everyday people, not just demos.

Core contributions

I focused on reticle intent, low-fatigue hand gestures, and contextual UI that stayed readable while moving.

My goal was simple: make AR feel natural and calm, not loud.

  • Reticle + gesture interaction model (Reticle Gesture)
  • Early holographic keyboard exploration with tactile fallback
  • Personal/private/public AR state framing by context and distance
  • Prototype storytelling to align product, engineering, and partners

Cross-functional and industry work

I collaborated with Jayse Hansen (J.A.R.V.I.S. UI designer from Iron Man) to translate cinematic UI ideas into practical real-world AR.

We also explored medical and high-precision workflows with surgeons and enterprise teams.

Legacy and impact

This is where many of my core principles were formed: intent-first interaction, low-friction motion, and context-aware overlays.

A lot of the ideas from that period, especially gaze + gesture combinations, later became common in mainstream spatial products.
